Sweet Sour Lentils with Chard(Bhooni Dal aur Subji)

Lentils is full of folic acid and good  for you. It is full of nutrients and other healthy pluses to start your day. How about a handful of your favorite veggies added to the lentils. I have made my lentils sweet from the chard and sour from the Kokam(fruit) grown and found in south Asia. It is a red colored fruit used in cooking and other medicinal purposes. It is full in antioxidants and had great taste to it.

Different ways and methods are used to make lentils tasty and at the same time not boring. In Mumbai usal, misal ani amthi bhaat are the staple diet. They use kokam(red fruit) in these preparation.

1/2 cup yellow lentils(Toor dal) and 3/4 cup red lentils(Split masoor dal)(soak in 1 cup water for 30 mints)drain
2 1/2 cups water or vegetable broth
2 medium sized red tomatoes
1 tsp tomato paste(tamatar)
1 1/2 cup cut swiss chard
1/2 medium sized onion(thinly diced)
1 tsp red chilli powder(lal Mirch)
1/2 tsp cumin powder(jeera)
1/2 tsp curry powder
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
A pinch of red chilli flakes
2-3 garlic cloves thinly cut
2-3 pieces dried  Kokam or (Dried mango)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder(Haldi)
salt to taste(Namak)

Skechers Midnight Shoes Preparation: Add all the above ingredients together in a pressure cooker or slow cooker and let it cook, till it is well done.
In a medium size pan take 1 tblsp olive oil for tempering the lentils. Add red chilli flakes, Add 1/2 tblsp cumin seed, add 3 cloves garlic thinly cut. When sizzling, add lentils to it. Garnish with cilantro. Eat will rice, or as soup or anything you prefer.
